Skadonk

CREATED AND PERFORMED BY ELLIS PEARSON AND BHEKI MKHWANE
PRESENTED BY SUE CLARENCE PROMOTIONS

"Life is a journey" - and this incredible journey is full of opportunities. Bheki and Ellis are aware of this and try to live their lives in this way. In their new piece of theatre, SKADONK, they invite you to do the same.

Come to a patch of lawn, a soccer field, the Sydney Opera House and they will take you on the journey of the central character, Big Ben Moeketsie. It is a remarkable story - actually a true story - that is fleshed out by incidents in Ellis and Bheki’s own lives and the lives of the people they know. It is a story of sacrifice that will move you and make you laugh.

In a real sense it is also your story and your journey. It is closely tied to the enormous transformation happening in our country right now. Bheki and Ellis strongly feel the need to see the bigger picture of the events in our lives here in Africa. Africa - and particularly at this time, our part of Africa is of crucial importance to the world. It is teaching the planet something! What? Well, listen to your angels. Listen to your dreams. Take the journey. Don’t hold back. Because each of us is being given the opportunity to be part of this transformation. In the story SKADONK you will come across characters who don’t want to change, let alone be transformed. We all tend to be like this. Could this journey make a difference? The real battle has begun!

Bheki and Ellis feel so strongly for the work they do: a simple story, powerfully told; a story that is African yet universal; a story that speaks to everyone; a story told with physical humour that transcends cultural differences. They take off their hats to the Standard Bank who have joined the journey by making it possible to tell the story for everyone. This is very much part of their plan.

Somebody asks: why the name SKADONK? What’s in a name? Important things! Let’s explore our cultures here in South Africa. Let’s find out their strengths. Combine them. Love them. Be proud of them. Then, let’s find words that show our coming together. SKADONK is such a word.

Wozani! Come with us on this journey. The angels will be there waiting for you. Don’t chase them away. We need them …
