School Work

Apart from the sponsored work in economically depressed schools, Ellis and Bheki do a great deal of work in schools throughout South Africa. There are several vital reasons for this aspect to their work: they believe that theatre in itself is a vibrant form of education; theatre can easily be used as a method to teach other curricular subjects; the particular style and content of their theatre pieces is relevant to a developing SA.

Performances and workshops are given to both primary and high schools.

Workshops are specifically tailored to suit the requirements of every school: they range from theatre of the imagination, to mime and physical theatre, workshopping and scripting a story. Workshops are also based specifically on the academic Speech & Drama syllabus for Grades 10, 11 and 12.

All Ellis and Bheki's theatre pieces are regularly performed in schools. Although they are not specifically related to any subject or curriculum, teachers throughout SA recognize the wider educational significance of the work and are, therefore, keen supporters of it.

All work is done at the schools, thus obviating the problems of transport for schools. Performances and workshops are scheduled to fit in with every schools' timetable.

BOY CALLED RUBBISH, performed by Sean de Klerk and Sdumo Mtshali, directed by Ellis, is currently available to schools in South Africa.
